Emma, volume 4
William is still going about the motions of the life his father and high society expect of him, while falling to pieces behind closed doors. He deeply regrets not trying hard enough to find Emma, and takes up unhealthy habits in his utter depression. Meanwhile, Emma has been asked by Mrs. Trollop to accompany her to an important social event in London, much to her reluctance. Not only has she gone back to the city she'd never expected to set foot in again in 100 years, the news of William's recent life changing arrangement may be more than she can bare.
Oooh, plot twist! Mrs. Trollop's connection to the Jones (specifically William) family was closer than I thought. You can't help but feel even more sympathy for William in this volume, he's so sad and unhappy, and well on his way to being an alcoholic.
